Living and breathing in the Second City
Don’t get me wrong. I loooooove beer. You know I love beer. But what the heck is Mayor Daley doing giving $20 million in tax benefits for MIllerCoors to move to Chicago. The money is justified on grounds it will “create” jobs. I guess that’s what happens when you have the highest sales tax in the nation, you start paying businesses to keep doing what they were doing before without your help. If Daley wants to create jobs he should just give us all a tax break and watch Chicago’s economy explode!

The worst part is, they won’t create any jobs. The positions are going to be filled internally from the two companies’ current headquarters staffs. So even that thin and debatable justification for tax breaks was bunk.

“Create” jobs? OK, let’s say that oh, 400 jobs are “created” for the new Chicago office. Will the 400 jobs = $20 Million in tax benefits that Daley is giving the company? No way.
Further, TIFS are supposed to be utilized for investment in “blighted” areas. Since when has the Loop or River North (2 proposed areas for Miller/Coors to move to) been a blighted area?
Its a rhetorical question, for we all know that TIFS are a scam plain & simple. TIFS are a means for Daley to have a slush fund he can dole out where and to whom he sees fit. One can’t help but wonder if a great portion of TIF financing will go into the 2016 Olympic bid.
Further, Miller & Coors are HORRIBLE beers.
Local brewery Goose Island makes terrific beer & Goose Island lost its lease, and is going to have to be relocated from the North & Clyborn corridor…perhaps Goose Island can secure TIF financing for a move to a new location…
