Goodbye Kerry

In: Cubs, Sports, Uncategorized

It’s hard to see Kerry Wood go. He’s been one of my favorites ever since I moved to Chicago in 1999. But he’s a victim of his own success story, he can command a much bigger salary than the Cubs are willing to pay at the moment. Good luck to him.

Barack Obama, Digital Messiah

In: Uncategorized

One of the yet untold stories of the Barack Obama campaign is about his use of technology. Obama’s presidency is “historical” in soooo many ways that no one is talking about the fact that his campaign represents a coming-of-age for political new-media like blogs and social networks. Of course we can trace the use of [...]

It’s the economy, stupid

In: Uncategorized

If I were Obama, I come out and make a statement about the economy immediately. And if he’s smart he’ll back off his campaign promises to raise taxes. Otherwise, my guess is that the sell off will continue. From Bloomberg:
The stock market posted its biggest plunge following a presidential election as reports on jobs and [...]

Has anyone else noticed that Hester looks as if he’s lost something. He is still fast, but he just doesn’t seem to have quite the same burst of speed that used to allow get through special teams without even hardly getting touched. Is it me?
There is a certain irony in the fact that Grossman is [...]

Dude, I hate Bye Weeks

In: Uncategorized

There’s nothing worse during football season than bye weeks. I’m sure they are much beloved by the team but they drive me insane. John Mullins has a great article about Kyle Orton, who I can’t say enough positive things about. He’s not Peyton Manning, but hell he’s got potential to be the best Bears QB [...]

So the other day I criticized Dan Seals for his distortions of Mark Kirk’s voting record. I since discovered that Kirk apparently doesn’t want to defend his voting record and instead would rather go after the trustworthiness of his attacker.
From WeAreIllinois.org:
North Shore Democratic congressional candidate Dan Seals’ campaign on Tuesday defended using an Iraq War [...]

Wait til never

In: Cubs, Uncategorized

All weekend, I’ve been pondering exactly what I would write about the Cubs this morning. Why did I wait until Monday to write about the Cubs pathetic loss to the Dodgers on Saturday? Because if I had written something yesterday, it would have been a string of obscenity.
So what can you say after 100 years [...]

MacArthur Genius Grants Announced

In: Life, Uncategorized

Maybe I’m just jealous, but I can’t help it. Isn’t the MacArthur “Genius Grant” kind of like the Heisman Trophy for smart people. It’s a big deal, yes, but a horrible predictor of future greatness. I’d love to see a study of MacArthur Fellows, kind of a where-are-they-now thing.
None of this is to say that [...]

A little intense, but interesting still.

John Kass writes this morning about the UIC Library’s refusal to release papers related to the Annenberg Challenge:
First the librarians told Kurtz yes, come look. But by the time Kurtz landed in Chicago, the librarians changed their minds. The donor of the documents hadn’t cleared his research. Perhaps they’ll let him look at the documents [...]

The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
