Chicago Tribune Redesigns … Again

In: Media

It seems it hasn’t been that long since the first redesign. Actually, it was just January of this year. But they apparently felt the need to re-redesign. The new version, out today, is a microcosm of the news industry. More color, bigger pictures, shorter stories. In fact, it’s eerily reminiscent of the Red Eye.

One thing I thought particularly interesting in John McCain’s speech last night was the fine line he walked on the issue of partisanship. Here he is, nominee of the Republican Party. But he’s been running against the party since the 2000 primary election. So here he is, the maverick, representing the incumbent party and still [...]

I don’t mean to gang up on Illinois Reason, but I just can’t swallow this argument:
…What happens when one side of the political spectrum, through fetid ranting over the course of a great many years, foments rage and anger and promotes and even glorifies violence in order to ‘pump up their base of voters’?
Idiots try [...]

Jay Mariotti Resigns

In: Chicago, Media, Sports

Wow. While I can’t say I’ll necessarily miss his commentary, I think this could be a big moment in media news. Mariotti is a relatively big name. The Sun-Times has been on the leading edge of the newpaper industry’s demise. Mariotti is openly saying in essence, there is no future in newspapers. He’s right. When [...]

Obama’s dropping poll numbers

In: Elections, Media, Politics

The media has been abuzz about McCain’s surge in the polls, or rather, Obama’s sag. I’m sure it is mostly to do with McCain’s presence at Rick Warren’s forum. Or the crisis in Georgia. But I can’t help thinking that just a small part of it could be that the All Obama Network, also known [...]

Forget the polls. There is a new metirc to consider when judging the strength of presidential campaigns: web presence. It is a dose of dramatic irony that Obama is literally beating the pants off the man who eight years ago broke new ground in online campaigning. The Maverick McCain in 2000 beat the establishment candidate [...]

Most Influential Illinois Blogs

In: Blogging, Media

So apparently, Blogsnetnews.com does a ranking of Illinois’ most influential blogs. I’m not on this list … in fact I’m not even in their damn system! That’s #$%)@*#&$_@(#*$&)@(#*$&)(@#*$&.

Build Your Own Electoral Map

In: Elections, Media, Politics

I don’t have much time for blogging today. I have tons of “work” to do. Needless to say, now is not the time to find something really cool online to distract me. But as fate would have it, I did. The guys at Politicker have put together an application that allows you to build your [...]

Daily Kos Gets Unfriendly Story Pulled

In: Media, Politics

According to Warner Todd Huston, the Austin American Statesman retracted an article that called Gore’s appearance at Net Roots conference a “faint-in.” The Daily Kos crowd wasn’t pleased with the coverage and bombarded the publisher with complaints. Hmmm. What’s next, taking to the streets and burning effigies? What country do we live in?

From Crains:
ASK Public Strategies, a firm headed by Obama campaign senior consultant David Axelrod, and the Chicago office of Hill & Knowlton will head a projected $2-million to $3-million media and advertising campaign planned by the Alliance to Protect the Illinois Constitution.
“We haven’t signed the contract, but they’re going to be the choice,” said Greg [...]
